BAMBOO FLUTE

I wonder wherefrom could it be,
Who could make the music, my friend!

Is it from the hillock over there?
Is it from the branch of the tree?
Is it from where the cattle graze?
Making me faint,
Wherefrom could it be?
Who could make the music, my friend?

Is it from the holy Yamuna
Full of sounding waves?
Is it from the grove with rustling leaves,
This nectar of music?
Wherefrom could it be?
Who could make the music, my friend?

Is it from the woods?
Is it from the moon through the winds?
Is it from abroad ferried by the breeze?
My life melts in the music.
Wherefrom could it be?
Who could make the music, my friend?

Can there be any bird anywhere
That can sing the nectar-fiery song?
Is it from the instruments
Of the celestials, hidden somewhere?
Wherefrom could it be?
Who could make the music, my friend?

It is but Kanna’s bamboo flute!
Nectar unto the ear but poison unto the heart.
Not a note of music, my friend,
But an arrow shot to lay the dames in anguish.

யாற்றி னின்றும் ஒலிப்பதுவோ - அன்றி
இலையொ லிக்கும் பொழிலிடை நின்றும்
எழுவதோஇஃ தின்னமு தைப்போல் - (எங்கிருந்து)
காட்டி னின்றும் வருகுவதோ - நிலாக்
காற்றைக் கொண்டு தருகுவதோ - வெளி
நாட்டி னின்றுமித் தென்றல் கொணர்வதோ
நாத மிஃதெ னுயிரை யுருக்குதே - (எங்கிருந்து)
பறவை யேதுமொன்றுள் ளதுவோ - இங்ஙன்
பாடு மோஅமு தக்கனற் பாட்டு
மறைவி னின்றுங் கின்னர ராதியர்
வாத்தி யத்தி னிசையிது வோஅடி - (எங்கிருந்து)
கண்ண னூதிடும் வேய்ங்குழல் தானடீ
காதி லேயமு துள்ளத்தில் நஞ்சு
பண்ணன் றாமடி பாவையர் வாடப்
பாடி யெய்திடும் அம்படி தோழி (எங்கிருந்து)
