IN PRAISE OF SARASWATHY DEVI
(The Goddess of Knowledge)

Reside doth She in the white lotus.
Manifest doth She in the music of the Veena.
Dwell doth She in the hearts of poets
Uttering poems seeped in delight.
Shine forth doth She from within the Vedas
That seek and speak of the Great Existent.
Become doth She the content
Of the graceful utterance of unblemished saints.

She is the song sung in the sweet voice of women.
She is the lilting of the babes.
She has her domicile
In the voice of the songster koel and the parrot’s tongue.
She lies in the beauty
Of all the paintings of unblemished craft;
Of all the carvings on towers and in temples.
She is delight manifest.

Those who make an honest living –
The smiths forging weaponry;
Master sculptors on stone and wood;
Traders making abundant wealth;
Brave kings and Vedic scholars –
Surrender do they all unto You,
The Deity.

The Deity realized as the deity by all the deities;
Deity revealing distress to be dispelled;
Deity held as dear as life
By those who seek redemption;
Deity sought for success
By those who take up a mission;
Deity unto those who toil;
Deity unto the poets; Deity unto gods.

Establishing orchards of delicious fruits;
Founding fountains of sweet and cold water;
Commissioning a thousand centres to feed;
Sanctifying tens of thousands of temples;
Performing acts of benevolence
For the sake of lasting and glorious fame –
Far more virtuous than all these
Is to make one of the poor literate.

சரஸ்வதி தேவியின் புகழ்

வெள்ளைத் தாமரைப் பூவி லிருப்பாள்.
வீணை செய்யும் ஒலியி லிருப்பாள்.
கொள்ளை இன்பங் குலவு கவிதை
கூறு பாவலர் உள்ளத் திருப்பாள்.
உள்ளதாம் பொருள் தேடி யுணர்ந்தே
ஓதும் வேதத்தி னுண்ணின் றொளிர்வாள்.
கள்ளமற்ற முனிவர்கள் கூறும்
கருணை வாசகத் துட்பொரு ளாவாள்.

மாதர் தீங்குரற் பாட்டி லிருப்பாள்.
மக்கள் பேசும் மழலையி லுள்ளாள்.
கீதம் பாடுங் குயிலின் குரலைக்
கிளியி னாவை இருப்பிடங் கொண்டாள்.
கோத கன்ற தொழிலுடைத் தாகிக்
குலவு சித்திரம் கோபுரம் கோயில்
ஈத னைத்தின் எழிலிடை யுற்றாள்.
இன்ப மேவடி வாகிடப் பெற்றாள்.

வஞ்ச மற்ற தொழில்புரிந் துண்டு
வாழு மாந்தர் குலதெய்வ மாவாள்.
வெஞ்ச மர்க்குயி ராகிய கொல்லர்
வித்தை யோர்ந்திடுந்திடு சிற்பியர் தச்சர்
மிஞ்ச நற்பொருள் வாணிகஞ் செய்வோர்
வீர மன்னர்பின் வேதியர் யாரும்
தஞ்ச மென்று வணங்கிடுந் தெய்வம்
தரணி மீதறி வாகிய தெய்வம்.

தெய்வம் யாவும் உணர்ந்திடுந் தெய்வம்
தீமை காட்டி விலக்கிடுந் தெய்வம்
உய்வமென்ற கருத்துடை யோர்கள்
உயிரி னுக்குயி ராகிய தெய்வம்
செய்வ மென்றொரு செய்கை யெடுப்போர்
செம்மை நாடிப் பணிந்திடு தெய்வம்
கைவ ருந்தி உழைப்பவர் தெய்வம்
கவிஞர் தெய்வம் கடவுளர் தெய்வம்.

இன்ன றுங்கனிச் சோலைகள் செய்தல்
இனிய நீர்த்தண் சுனைக ளியற்றல்
அன்ன சத்திர மாயிரம் வைத்தல்
ஆல யம்பதி னாயிர நாட்டல்
பின்ன ருள்ள தருமங்கள் யாவும்
பெயர்வி ளங்கி யொளிர நிறுத்தல்
அன்ன யாவினும் புண்ணியங் கோடி
ஆங்கோ ரேழைக் கெழுத்தறி வித்தல்.
